A total of 74 deputies are required to sign up to force a president to appear. The Majlis said 77 deputies have done so and Ahmadi-nejad must appear within one month. Ahmadi-nejad was forced to appear last March—the first time the Majlis had ever ordered a president before it. But Ahmadi-nejad ran off with the show. The questions were read out in the Majlis and Ahmadi-nejad then got a full hour to respond. He dodged most of the questions, harangued and ridiculed Majlis deputies, cracked jokes and then went home. It was not clear why any deputies wanted to call him back again. Technically, if deputies find his answers inadequate, the Majlis can move to impeach him. But since Supreme Leader Ali Khamenehi has already said he doesn’t approve of that idea, it remains unclear what the deputies summoning Ahmadi-nejad hope to accomplish.
