The Chamber of Commerce says a “mafia” has warehouses in a foreign country it did not name where goods are taken until a shortage can be created and the goods re-imported at a great markup. Potatoes are now very rare in Iranian markets. The chamber said that some time ago, large quantities of potatoes were exported at 150,000 rials per kilo and have now been re-imported at 350,000 rials per kilos (7 cents a pound to 16 cents a pound), a markup of 133%.
