In a poll taken this month by the Pew Research Center, 58 percent of Americans surveyed said it was very important to stop Iran from developing nuclear weapons even if that meant taking military action. Only 30 percent said it was more important to avoid a military conflict with Iran even if that meant Iran would get nuclear weapons.
In other words, that was 2-to-1 support for going to war to stop Iran from going nuclear—a greater margin of support for military action than found before all the wars the United States has entered since the polling era began.
Majorities of Republicans, Democrats and independents all were willing to accept war over a nuclear Iran.
Sixty-four percent of those polled said they do not believe that any sanctions will convince Iran to give up its nuclear program. Again, majorities of Republicans, Democrats and independents all agreed sanctions would not work.
The results to the two questions taken together suggested that Americans were ready to accept a military conflict with Iran if the president said there was no alternative.
