Iranians are not required by law to fast. But those who do not fast are barred from eating or smoking in public during the month. And Police Chief Esmail Ahmadi-Moqaddam made clear last week that the police would enforce the ban.
Other police officials added that the ban on smoking or eating in public also applies to those riding in or driving cars.
Some restaurants have been licensed to remain open during the daylight hours of Ramadan to serve travelers, who are exempt from the fast. But all other eateries must remain closed until sundown.
Moqaddam said travelers exempt from the fast are not exempt from the ban on public eating. Last year, violators of the fast rules were fined up to as much as 13 million rials ($670).
