The execution of a man near the Caspian was canceled when local citizens disrupted the scene of the planned public hanging.
The incident was the latest in what has become a series of protests against executions in the past year.
The daily Iran reported that the man, referred to only as “Mohsen,” was set to be hanged last Monday in Mahmudabad, a town near the Caspian in Mazandaran province.
Three thousand people showed up and, according to the report, “noise and commotion and physical actions resulting from an attack on a security fence” led to the cancellation of the execution.
The decision to put off the execution to a future date was taken by the city’s Security Council and Judiciary officials, the report said.
The condemned man had been found guilty of stabbing a young man to death in a street brawl.
