Interior Minister Mostafa Mohammad-Najjar announced last Wednesday that the cabinet had approved a plan to add one new Majlis seat in each of 20 of Iran’s 31 provinces.
Article 64 of the Constitution created the Majlis with 270 seats after the revolution and provides that not more than 20 seats can be added after each successive 10-year period. The number was raised by 20 to 290 with the 2000 elections.
The proposal will still have to be approved by the Majlis.
The next Majlis elections are scheduled to be held March 2, 2012.
