Persian puppets warmly received in London

Based on a play of the same name by Federico Garcia Lorca, Sabri’s puppet show was staged from November 2 to 6, at London’s New Diorama Theater.

“Critics rated the show as very good,” Sabri told the Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA).”The Persian version of Lorca’s play enchanted the audience.”

The House of Bernarda Alba was Lorca’s last play completed two months before his death in 1936. First performed in 1945, the play explores themes of repression, passion and conformity.

Bernarda Alba is an isolated widow trapped in mourning with her five daughters. One by one, Bernarda’s daughters plan to escape—each with tragic and lasting consequences.

Sabri has used the play’s potentials for puppet performance and has converted it according to her own taste while being faithful to Lorca’s script.

The House of Bernarda Alba was also staged at the Charleville-Mezieres Puppet Theater Festival in France in September 2011.
