Amir Vahedi (photo) was a poker professional who was named Texas Hold’em Player of the Year in 2001. He finished sixth in the World Series of Poker Main Event in 2003. He taught actor Ben Afleck how to play poker. He is estimated to have won $3,250,000 in his playing career. He fought in the Iran-Iraq war in the 1980s. Amir Vahedi died January 8 in, appropriately, Las Vegas. He was 48 years old and suffered from complications from diabetes.
