Iranian-American Milad Pooran, however, lost. He came in third in a five-person field with a little less than 10 percent of the vote. He was seeking the Democratic nomination for Congress from the Sixth District that takes in Maryland’s long panhandle.
Over in the GOP primary in that district, Kathy Afzali, who is married to an Iranian-American, was running in an eight-person field. She also came in third and got a little more than 10 percent of the vote.
The winner was Kenneth Timmerman, who has been active in support of the opposition to the Islamic Republic. He was running for the Republican nomination in the next door 8th District and won in a
four-way race with 46 percent of the vote.
But Timmerman’s win may be brief. He won the GOP nomination to face incumbent Democrat Chris Van Hollen, who is part of the Democratic leadership in Congress. Van Hollen is widely believed to be entrenched and unbeatable in his
district.
Timmerman, 58, is president of the Foundation for Democracy in Iran. He was also the chief investigator for the 9/11 families in the lawsuit they filed against the Islamic Republic. He is a frequent writer of commentaries about Iran, a number of which have appeared in the Iran Times.
