A labor union that launched a strike against the national oil company June 19 says its ranks have now grown to 20,000 strikers. The strikers are contract employees of the National Iranian Oil Co. The NIOC has been hiring more and more contract workers to replace regular staff because laws protecting full-time staff do not apply to contract staff. The strikers are demanding wage increases, a schedule of 14 days on and 14 days off, improved dorms and better safety standards.
