In late January, many news agencies around the world quoted Ali-Asghar Zarean, an official of Iran’s Atomic Energy Organization, as saying Iran now has the capability to enrich uranium to weapons grade or any level it wishes. This was presented as some kind of new technological achievement. Actually, Iran has had the ability to produce weapons-grade uranium since it started its first centrifuge spinning more than a decade ago. Higher enrichment is achieved simply by spinning uranium longer in a centrifuge.
