accused of bringing 13 shipping containers of military gear into the country to go free on bail.
Justice Ishaq Bello allowed Azim Aghajani to leave jail upon payment of 25 million naira ($260,000).
Aghajani is supposed to reappear in court for trial January 31.
The judge required that two officials of the Iranian embassy appear to post bail and guarantee that Aghajani would appear for trial, the Nigerian daily This Day reported. The judge noted that no official of the Nigerian government came to court to object to bail.
There was no shortage of others, however, who expected Aghajani to disappear.
Aghajani was arrested November 25 along with three Nigerian nationals and accused of illegally importing the arms in containers marked as containing building materials.
A UN team is due to visit Nigeria to investigate the shipment shortly before the trial begins.
The daily Vanguard quoted an unnamed Nigerian official as saying that an eight-member UN team, including representatives from all five permanent members of the UN Security Council, would arrive in Nigeria the third week of January to inspect the cache of arms.
