Supreme Leader Ali Khamenehi has named Ahmad Khatami, one of Tehran’s Friday prayer leaders, to serve on the 12-man Council of Guardians, replacing Ayatollah Mohammad Yazdi, who resigned, citing ill health. The main tasks of the council are to approve candidates for the presidency and the Majlis and to veto legislation it finds violate the Constitution or Islamic law. Khatami is not related to former President Mohammad Khatami.
