The Islamic Republic has yet again claimed that it stopped pirates from attacking an Iranian merchant ship in the Gulf of Aden May 13 and that the two Navy ships Iran sends on anti-piracy duty off Somalia foiled the attack. As with other such recent claims, Iran did not name the Iranian ship it says came under attack. The UN International Maritime Organization (IMO), like other piracy monitoring groups, has not recognized Iran’s claims and does not list its reports. They all say that piracy by Somalis has almost completely been eliminated for several years.
