The dubbing of films actually began in Iran in the 1950s with training from the Italians who made a science of dubbing when large numbers of Italians were still illiterate. The Iranian dubbers made a point of using the same voice for the same actor. The guy who voiced for Jerry Lewis was literally picked off the street when a dubbing executive heard him hawking goods in the same creaky voice as Lewis.
