The Tehran City Council Tuesday renamed a street in the capital to honor the late Prime Minister Mohammad Mossadegh.
After the 1979 revolution, Tehran changed the name of its central north-south street, Pahlavi Avenue, to Mossadegh Avenue. But 2-1/2 years later, the authorities renamed it Vali-e Asr, or “Master of Time,” in reference to the 12th Imam.
The revolutionaries in charge at that point criticized Mossadegh for being secular.
More moderate figures, like those who won control of the City Council in last year’s elections, tend to see Moss-adegh as an inspiring figure and thinker.
