Seven miners were asphyxiated April 7 by carbon monoxide while working in a small coal mine in Semnan province. The provincial government said the mine was licensed and had never had any accidents. But the National Coal Association said the mine was not licensed. Just six months earlier, 34 miners died in a coal mine explosion in Khorasan South province, part of a long series of deadly mine accidents.
