The city still has not formally declared the winners and isn’t expected to do so until next week. But it posted the results of its ranked ballot system showing Mirkarimi with 53.2 percent of the vote for sheriff and George Gascon elected district attorney with 62.8 percent,
No one emerged with a majority on election night. But San Francisco’s new ranked ballot is used to avoid runoff elections. Voters not only pick their first choice, but also their second and third choices. The votes given the last-placed candidate are then redistributed to the second choices. The bottom-ranked candidate is dropped and his votes redistributed progressively until someone ends up with a majority.
Ed Lee leads for mayor, the first Chinese-American mayor of San Francisco. A total of 24 candidates ran for mayor.
Mayor, sheriff and DA are the three posts elected citywide in San Francisco.
