Minimum wage raised in line with inflation

April 15, 2016

MinWage221The new minimum wage for the just-started Persian year will be sufficient to cover the rate of inflation last year—but won’t make up for the slippage in most years of the Ahmadi-nejad Administration.

The Supreme Labor Council set the minimum wage for the new year at 8,110,000 rials per month—$232 per month or $2,784 for the year, not exactly a princely sum.

That is a raise of 14 percent compared to the 13.2 percent inflation rate last year.

The Iranian Labor News Agency (ILNA) said the minimum wage would apply to 13 million laborers or just over half the total workforce of 25 million.

The minimum wage was set by a committee comprised of government officials, state labor unions and private employers.

Radio Zamaneh said that census reports calculate expenses for a family of four at around 18 million rials per month, so that a family with two people working at the minimum wage would still come up short.
