The Atomic Energy Organization of Iran says it plans to build a chain of small nuclear plants along the Persian Gulf coast in order to desalinate water for dry communities in the region. As reported above, a large part of the Persian Gulf coastal area is under severe drought conditions right now. The plants will generate 50 and 100 megawatts as compared to the 1,000-megawatt size of the Bushehr nuclear power plant.
