Defense Minister Hossain Dehqan (photo) says that 27 years after the end of the Iran-Iraq War the government has now cleared 99 percent of the mines laid down in western Iran during the war. He didn’t say how he knew where all the minefields were, as Iraq did not keep maps of where it buried mines. He also didn’t say when the last 1 percent would be cleared. But he said 91 people have been killed and 110 disabled trying to clear the minefields.
