In a proclamation that may have resonance in Iran, Pope Francis (photo) called on the Catholic Church to stress mercy rather than severity. “The church’s very credibility is seen in how she shows merciful and compassionate love,” the pontiff wrote in a 12-page message. He said the church must renounce “arms of severity” and embrace the “medicine of mercy.”
