Manufacturing in dire straits

The head of the House of Workers, Ali-Reza Mahjub, a member of the last Majlis, cited official statistics to show that 100,000 workers have been laid off from 1,000 production units in the past year. The Iranian labor News Agency (ILNA)  reported.

Women, said Mahjub, comprise about two-thirds of those laid off.

As for those not laid off, Mahjub  said, “Women in many large manufacturing units and carpet-weaving sites are sometimes receiving two-thirds of the approved minimum wage, but they refrain from filing complaints for fear of losing their jobs entirely.”

In another report, a labor activist, Faramarz Tofighi, said that reports show that  since Now Ruz 30 percent of workers in the manufacturing sector have been laid off due to failing market conditions.

He said scores of manufacturing firms have gone bankrupt and shut down.

Tofighi said manufacturers are in a precarious situation, faced with the effects of sanctions, the restructuring of government subsidies and the lack of government support.
