Malaysia has been frenzied in recent months by what it sees as a massive conspiracy to spread Shiism in the overwhelmingly Sunni society. A cabinet minister announced last week that the government has now set up a “special laboratory” to confront and prevent the spread of Shiite doctrines among the Malay people. A thousand people attending a symposium on the threat were told that Shiites are infiltrating federal and state religious departments to manipulate religious policies in an effort to make Shiism Malaysia’s foremost school of Islam.
