Lots of empty homes could solve shortage

Nikzad said a housing census taken last year showed the huge volume of empty residences.  He said there was no reason for so many homes to be empty.

He said the capital has about 3 million residences and that 328,000 or more than 10 percent were empty when the census was taken.

Many owners decline to rent out homes and apartments they own because they are anticipating rising prices and hope to sell then.

Nikzad proposed that the Majlis impose a tax on empty housing units in an effort to press owners either to rent or sell swiftly.
