A backhoe operator digging a trench for a gas pipeline has had an unusual find, digging up a cache of about 1,800 coins that are more than 1,800 years old. It isn’t clear if the backhoe operator unearthed an ancient bank, the home of a wealthy man or perhaps the hiding place of a long dead thief. The coins were found in northern Khuzestan province. Made of copper and lead, they are local coinage made by the Elymais local government that was part of the Parthian Empire (247 BCE-224 CE).
