LOSING GROUND AGAIN

February 07 2020

The rial has weakened in recent months, which is not surprising considering the political winds blowing against the Islamic Republic. But the currency is not seeing another mass collapse as it has almost every decade since the revolution. The rial improved last fall, with the dollar briefly selling for less than 120,000 rials in mid-November. Then the rial slid until a dollar went for 140,000 in early January. Now the dollar is running around 135,000 rials by the various measures monitored by the Iran Times, or about the same as it was at Now Ruz.
