The reservoirs behind dams in Khuzestan province are only 15 percent filled, too little to generate electricity or provide much irrigation water. The five dam reservoirs that supply Tehran with drinking water Taleqan, Latyan, Mamlou, Amir Kabir and Larare also only filled 15 percent.
The state news agency quoted Farhad Izadjou, managing director of the Khuzestan provincial water and power organization, as saying the cultivation of water-intensive crops, including maize and rice, has been banned in Khuzestan for the next growing season.
He said providing water to farmers has been downgraded from a top priority. “The supply of drinking water is our first priority,” he said.
