LITTLE INVESTMENT

The latest UN figures show hardly anyone from other countries is investing in Iran. For the fifth straight year, total Foreign Direct Investment in Iran has remained around $1.5 billion, a paltry figure, especially when compared with the annual investment totals from 2002 through 2017. The last five years the totals of foreign investment have been lower than in every one of those 16 years.
The Khatami Administration made a decision in 2000 to actively attract foreign investment. Before that, the Islamic Republic disdained foreign investment. The low figures of the last five years don’t reflect any return to the old attitude. The regime is actively trying to attract foreign investment. The figures shown in this chart are published annually by the UN Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD).
