of khoon bas on Iran’s national heritage registry. Khoon bas, literally “enough blood,” is the tradition of ending family feuds by forcing a woman from one family to marry into the other. It is not common or normal throughout the country, but is an honored tradition in Kohgiluyeh va Boyer Ahmad Province in the far south. The Mehr news agency quoted the head of the registry list as saying, “Khoon bas was not registered because we had other prioritiesÖ. However, the file will be reviewed at another time.” Women’s groups denounced the practice, saying it generally meant the woman was being sent into virtual slavery.
