It is being pushed mainly by Republicans who think there is much Iranian sneakiness going on in Latin America. However, it may well serve as a platform for diplomats to report findings that Iran has talked a great deal but actually done little in Latin America. But Michael Braun, former chief of intelligence for the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), who retired in 2008, recently told Congress that Iranian ties with Latin drug cartels is growing “faster than most policymakers in Washington choose to admit.”
