The long-imprisoned leader of the Kurdistan Workers Party of Turkiye (PKK), Abdollah Ocalan, urged a ceasefire from his prison cell and his party swiftly embraced it March 1, apparently ending four decades of warfare. In his letter, Ocalan, 75, said the PKK was born as a fighting force when “the channels of democratic politics were closed.” He said that has now changed and the PKK rebellion is no longer needed and therefore the group should disband.
