“The End” will star 25-year-old Japanese actress Aoi Miyazaki and describe “a contemporary relationship in today’s Japan.”
This will be Kiarostami’s second movie filmed abroad since he left Iran for a life and career in exile.
His first such film, “Certified Copy,” was shot in Italy with a French female lead and a British male lead. It is currently showing in the United States to generally positive reviews. Juliette Binoche won the 2010 Best Actress Award at the Cannes Film Festival for her role in “Certified Copy.”
Neither of these films has anything to do with Iran or Iranians. Both are love stories. Both have been produced by the French firm MK2.
“Certified Copy” has been showing in art houses in the United States for seven weeks now. At most, it has been shown in 57 US theaters at any one time.
Worldwide, it has grossed $5.2 million, of which $1.1 million has been earned in the United States.
The website Box Office Mojo allows viewers to rate films. So far, “Certified Copy” has been given an A by 56 percent of the raters, a B by 33 percent and an F by 11 percent. No one has given it a C or a D.
“Certified Copy” has been shown widely across Europe and is expected to be screened shortly in Latin America and Asia.
