Former President Mohammad Khatami (photo) last week warned of what he called “nationwide disaffection” by the Iranian people and said the government needs to address the problems that are causing that disaffection, which he said included “economic, social and cultural problems.” He said, “This disaffection is spreading among Iranian youth and intellectual circles. Even among some of the clergy, there is a mounting sense of discontentment.” The statement was carried on a website known to be close to Khatami. But all media outlets inside Iran are banned from quoting him or running his picture.
