In response to the Indian government’s decision to have Muslim-majority Kashmir ruled by the Hindu-majority federal government, Iran issued only a bland statement calling on all parties to be calm. What stood out was that the Islamic Republic did not stand up for the Kashmiri Muslims—just as it has not stood up on behalf of Chinese Muslims being repressed by the national government of China. The Islamic Republic has rated good relations with India and China as much more important than its stated goal of defending Muslims worldwide.
