The Culture Ministry has appointed a new director of the Islamic Republic New Agency (IRNA) and actually picked a journalist rather than a political crony. The new director is Mohammad Khoddadi (photo), who started his career as an economic reporter with IRNA, later served as bureau chief in New Delhi, head of IRNA’s international reporting division and then as managing editor of Iran, the English language daily own by IRNA. Khoddadi will have his hands full as IRNA has atrophied into an organization that is little used or noted. Other news services like Fars and Mehr have a far better understanding of news than IRNA.
