The first national observatory in Iran, being built on Mount Gargash near Kashan in Esfahan province, will open for operation by mid-June of next year.
“All the components of the telescope and the control systems, except the mirror, are produced domestically,” said Sorena Sattari, the vice president for science and technology, the state news agency IRNA reported October 28.
The mirror will measure 340 centimeters (134 inches) across, which will make it the 43rd largest telescope in the world. The largest, in Arizona, measures 1,190 centimeters (469 inches).
The Mount Gargash peak has an altitude of 3,600 meters (11,800 feet), and was selected in 2009 after an eight-year search measuring atmospheric features that could impact operations. The peak is known for its low atmospheric turbulence and thus suitable for astronomical observations.
The builders are also trying to educate residents of the area to minimize their use of lights at night, since “light pollution” can reduce the utility of the telescope.
So far, about 1,400 students from 22 schools in towns and villages close to Gargash have been educated about the basics of astronomy and the effects of light pollution on the observatory. The project is using social media to engage the general public.
The construction has included an 11.2-kilometer (7-mile) road connecting the national road network to the summit.
