Iran has claimed that it has developed a hypersonic missile, something few countries are believed to have done. A supersonic missile flies more than the speed of sound; a hypersonic flies more than five times the speed of sound. What’s more, it is maneuverable, unlike a ballistic missile and therefore cannot be easily tracked and shot down. Russia, North Korea and Iran all claim to have hypersonic missiles, though most analysts do not believe anyone has a truly functional such missile yet. The US, China and India are known to have been working on hypersonic missiles for years. A Pentagon spokesman said the US was “skeptical” of Iran’s claim.
