That is a dramatic surge from five years ago, when the organization reported that Iran ranked 18th in the world having made 904,500 cars in 2006.
It says Iran produced 1,648,505 cars and trucks in 2011, up 3.1 percent from 2010 and up a whopping 82 percent from five years ago.
Iran’s 2011 output ranked it right between Russia with 2.0 million cars and trucks produced and Thailand with an output of 1.5 million.
The top carmakers were China (18.4 million), the United States (8.7 million) and Japan (8.4 million). Global output was 8.1 million.
