Former President Donald Trump has told rally-goers that Iran is currently building a nuclear bomb, although US intelligence says the Islamic Republic has had no nuclear weapons program for almost two decades.
Trump also advocated the death penalty for drug dealers, saying no country that executes drug dealers has a drug problem—although the Islamic Republic hangs large numbers of drug dealers and has the largest drug problem in the world.
Speaking to a rally in Arizona July 22, Trump said, “If you look at countries throughout the world, the only ones that don’t have a drug problem are those that institute the death penalty for drug dealers. They have no problems. They have no problem. We don’t do that.”
Later in the rally, Trump said, “We are a nation that is allowing Iran to build a massive nuclear weapon, which they incredibly are doing right now. They weren’t doing it with me. They wouldn’t have even given it a shot.”
A few months ago, the director of the Defense Intelligence Agency said Iran has no nuclear weapons program underway. The US intelligence community said 15 years ago that Iran had mothballed its nuclear weapons program in 2003 and it has said repeatedly ever since that the program has not been taken out of mothballs.
