In hot water again

August 08, 2014

Do you remember Hashem Aghajari (photo), the professor who got into deep trouble 11 years ago for commenting that Muslims are not “monkeys” who should “blindly follow” religious leaders? Well, he’s back in trouble with the authorities again.

Aghajari was originally convicted of apostasy and sentenced to death for his remarks. It took two years for his appeals to wend their way through the courts and for him to finally win release. But last month he was convicted of propaganda against the regime and sentenced to one year. The news reports gave no other details about this latest conviction. Shouldn’t he get some credit for those two years he lost on the previous conviction?
