The IAEA said the group was visiting to try to break the logjam of the past few years in which the Islamic Republic has refused to give the IAEA access to documents, people and locations the IAEA has said it must see to understand Iran’s nuclear program.
Tehran news reports said the IAEA delegation did not visit any nuclear sites during their trip. IAEA officials, however, said the group had never sought to do an inspection, but only to get Iran to sign onto a schedule for other IAEA specialists to conduct inspections in Iran.
Both the Fars and the Iranian Students News Agency reported that the two sides had “agreed to continue the talks.” But the IAEA wasn’t looking for more talks; it was looking for a schedule.
The IAEA delegation was led by Herman Nackaerts, who heads the IAEA’s inspection division.
