TAVANIR, the government electricity supply company, says the recent program to provide free electricity to those who don’t consume much power has prompted many households to cut their usage so they fall into the free-power zone. TAVANIR said the number of households consuming enough power to have to pay has fallen by 6.1 percent since the new program began a half-year ago. It didn’t say if low consumers were using more power, as many have predicted since it is free. The program was designed to help the poor.
