Hersh has a story in the current issue of The New Yorker magazine. He says the training began in 2005 and ended sometime before President Obama took office in January 2009.
He writes that the training was done by the Joint Special Operations Command (JSOC) in the Nevada desert. But JSOC denies conducting any training of Mojahedin members.
Hersh says that as a result the Mojahedin ended up supplied
with “resources like arms and intelligence.”
There was no indication who authorized such training. Hersh said he interviewed a retired four-star general who told him he learned what was going on from some of the trainers who called him and voiced concerns. “I told one of the guys who called me,” the general said, “that they were all in over their heads, and all of them could end up in trouble unless they got something in writing.”
Hersh said he was told the training was in communications, cryptography, weaponry and small unit tactics.
Hersh has written a number of articles in The New Yorker over the years alleging all sorts of nefarious activities by the Bush Administration against the Islamic Republic.
