Born in Tehran, he studied mathematics in France and Britain. After World War II, he went to the United States where he was hired to work at Princeton University under Albert Einstein and Robert Oppenheimer. In 1964, he joined NASA, where he did the mathematical calculations on how to get a rocket fired from the earth into an orbit around the moon, a requirement for the successful 1969 Apollo 11 moon landing
