Government mulls female-only universities

Deputy Science Minister Gholam-Reza Khajeh-sarvi said that his ministry—which oversees higher education—has outlined three ideas for “promoting chastity and hejab” and presented them to the Cultural Revolution Council, which is now studying them.

He specifically said the Council was reviewing a plan to set up one university for women in each provincial capital. He didn’t say what the other two ideas were about.

The Science Ministry only announced a few weeks ago that each provincial capital now has at least one university. Khajeh-sarvi didn’t say how many provincial capitals only have one university and thus could not have separate male and female universities swiftly.

Khajeh-sarvi said the efforts to segregate the genders at the university level had not stopped despite President Ahmadi-nejad’s public opposition. He said the president had solicited expert opinion on the issue.
