The tripling of gasoline prices in November not only caused riots, but also has severely reduced consumption. Average daily consumption in the eight months before the price hike was 95 million liters day, according to the National Iranian Oil Products Distribution Company. Consumption so far in the last month of the Persian year has been 70 million liters per day, a drop of more than a quarter. The regime had invested a vast sum to be able to refine enough gasoline for domestic requirements and now finds itself with vast surplus capacity.
