Nuclear chief Ali-Akbar Salehi says Iran will start producing uranium dioxide for reactor fuel to be put in the Bushehr power plant within three months. He didn’t say why Iran would do that. Iran has a contract with Russia to supply all the fuel needed at Bushehr for 10 years. Some thought the government was looking to create a rationale for its nuclear program. But it would have the benefit of diverting enriched uranium from possible weapons use. Iran already has made enough fuel for its small Tehran reactor to last into the 2020s and it won’t need any fuel for Bushehr until the 2020s, so it really has a problem justifying its uranium enrichment program.
