We have often commented about how much natural gas that comes out of oil wells is just burned off by Iran—far more than in most of the world and enough to produce more electricity than Iran’s new nuclear power plant. But the Christian Science Monitor reports that Iran now has a rival in the realm of wasting gas—North Dakota, the home of the latest oil boom as a result of fraking. The World Bank says firms in North Dakota burn off $1.2 billion worth of gas a year, almost as much as Iran.
