Fouled Up

August 16, 2024

A little-noticed problem emerged when a special election had to be held a year earlier than normal to fill the presidency after President Raisi’s death. Under the law, the Majlis and Assembly of Experts elections have been held together every four years. The next year, the president and city council elections are held.

The Majlis and presidential elections were both held this year because of Raisi’s death. The government now says that the city council elections next year will be held for three-year (instead of four-year) terms and then elections for every elective office will be held in 2028.
